Marques Mendes & Associados is a multidisciplinary Portuguese firm well known notably for combining a very strong corporate law practice, a prominent presence in all fields of both EC and national competition laws (agreements and concerted practices, merger control – often involving multi-jurisdiction concentration operations -, abuse of dominant position and State aid) and reported solid skills in all areas of finance law (including banking, insurance and project finance), IT, telecoms and media. The firm is also recognized for its highly successful experience in complex litigation and arbitration.

With one of the largest competition/antitrust law groups among Portuguese firms, the focus in this area of the law – at both national and EU levels – developed in parallel with the strong EU law practice of the firm, which has always been one of its most distinctive features.

Due to the specific academic and professional background of some of its members, the firm’s practice has always been internationally oriented. While a substantial part of the work carried out by the firm involves international clients, with or without local subsidiaries, the firm – which has also built, since its formation, a strong national client base – continues to advise, on a regular basis, national institutions, public sector entities, major corporations and associations of undertakings, which it often represents in proceedings before the European Commission and Portuguese regulatory authorities, as well as in cases handled before national and EU Courts.
