Historical background
The founding member states of the European Union from the beginning kept track of the harmonisation of intellectual property laws as a measure to safeguard a single economic market. In 1961 a working group was set up that produced a preliminary draft of a convention for a European trademark. Thirty-five years later, on 1 April 1996, the system for registration of the Community trademark began operations.
