The internet, like the universe, appears to be ever expanding and ever evolving. Intellectual property, and trademarks in particular, play a large role in this changing environment. Traditional borders have less and less significance, as virtual interaction grows and our global society increasingly connects through new technologies. Brand owners must look beyond their borders in order to adequately protect their trademarks and be able to capitalise on the potential for expansion. This book provides a quick reference to the trademark laws in some key jurisdictions around the globe. This overview will examine two recent developments impacting trademark law - the first being the emergence of social media websites and the second being the approval by ICANN of new top-level domain names (TLD) competing with the traditional .com and .net TLDs.
