Last year was a relatively quiet one for major changes to national patent systems. It is therefore difficult to discern very many common trends; rather, different countries have focused their attention on different aspects of the substantive or procedural features of their patent systems. The role of court decisions in several countries seems to have overshadowed any changes to the basic statutory provisions of their patent laws.
