In democratic societies, political leaders and public officials are entrusted with a duty to manage the public's interest. Without being accountable, it is difficult to envisage how they could discharge their duties in the interest of their constituents, the people. With so many burning social, economic and political issues weighing upon governments and inter-governmental organisations of the world, the question of accountability and integrity, or the lack of it, in public life is more pressing than ever.
