Susan Hutton is a senior partner in Stikeman Elliott's competition and international trade practice groups. She practises in the areas of competition law, foreign investment review and international trade. She has provided Competition Act and Investment Canada Act advice in respect of several complex mergers and acquisitions, including Wyeth/Pfizer, Alcoa/Alcan, Mittal/Arcelor, SBC/AT&T, Sanofi/Aventis, and Lafarge/Blue Circle. She has guided clients through civil and criminal investigations as well as complaints under the Competition Act, and provides compliance advice to numerous clients. She has successfully represented complainants and exporter/importers in dumping and countervailing duty actions. She is recognised by Chambers Global as a leading individual in The World's Leading Lawyers for Business, is repeatedly recommended by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and named one of The Best Lawyers in Canada for competition/antitrust.
Ms Hutton worked in the field of economic research with the Bank of Canada prior to entering law. She has worked in Bangkok and Singapore, and has advised the government of Vietnam regarding the development of its competition law.
Ms Hutton was chair of the 2006 organising committee for the CBA Annual Fall Competition Law conference and is a past chair of its legislation and competition policy committee. She is also active in the antitrust section of the ABA, the Information Technology Association of Canada and the IBA antitrust committee. She publishes and speaks frequently in her fields, and is editor-in-chief of the firm's newsletter, The Competitor.
