Mário Marques Mendes is a senior partner in the Lisbon law firm of Marques Mendes & Associados, focusing his practice on EU and Portuguese competition laws, as well as general EU and international trade law matters, M&A, telecommunications, energy and media.
He has a large experience in representing clients with respect to merger control, anti-competitive practices, State aid and public procurement, both in arbitration proceedings and in cases conducted before the European Commission and Portuguese regulatory authorities, having handled important litigation before national and EU courts. In particular, Mário Marques Mendes has advised and represented, in significant and well-known cases, the Portuguese Government and other public sector entities, as well as major national and international corporations operating in a variety of sectors which include telecommunications, media, cement, information technology, automotive industry, energy, transport and transport infrastructure.
Mário Marques Mendes is a 1976 law graduate of the University of Lisbon Law School, a 1981 law graduate of the College of Europe, Bruges (Belgium), and, as a Fulbright Scholar, a 1984 LL.M. graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor (USA).
He was admitted to the Portuguese Bar in 1976. After graduating from both the College of Europe and the University of Michigan Law School, Mário Marques Mendes became Assistant-Professor of Law at the University of Lisbon Law School and Lecturer in International Trade Law at the Center for European Studies of the Portuguese Catholic University, in Lisbon, while resuming private practice. He is currently senior and managing partner at the law firm Marques Mendes & Associados, having served as Vice-President of the Lisbon Council of the Portuguese Bar Association (1996-1999). He is Chairman of the Board of the Portuguese Association of Competition Lawyers (“CAPDC”).
He is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars, having written extensively on various subjects of EU law, notably competition/antitrust, merger control, State aid and State intervention, as well as of international trade law.
