Robert Reid has been engaged as foreign counsel with leading Indonesian law firm Soemadipradja & Taher since April 2000, arriving from Freehills’ office in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he worked as a senior commercial lawyer for over three years. Previously with Freehills’ Sydney Project and Resource Services Group, Robert’s main practice areas in Indonesia are natural resources, particularly mining, corporate/commercial and M&A.

Robert’s recent high profile projects in Indonesia include, acting for various major international mining companies to establish and expand their operations in Indonesia, including all structuring, licensing, regulatory, manpower, and transitional issues in the light of the 2009 mining law and the implementing regulations.

Other areas of Robert’s expertise include preparation of supply and distribution agreements, advising on complex manpower issues, insurance sector matters, as well as joint venture and consortium agreements. Robert has a reputation for being able to break down complex matters into their basic elements and offer sound commercial advice.

Robert is consistently recognised and recommended as a leading practitioner in legal publications.

Robert holds a B.A. (Hons) and L.L.B. from the University of New South Wales and is a member of the Indonesia Australia Business Council and the Inter-Pacific Bar Association. He is also an occasional guest lecturer at the University of Indonesia and a regular author of mining publications.
