Llewellyn Parker was a partner at Bowman Gilfillan for many years. He was primarily responsible for handling foreign and local biotechnological patents. This included reading foreign patent specifications prior to filing in South Africa to ensure compliance with local requirements as well as effecting necessary amendments where there is noncompliance. Regarding local intellectual property, this includes preparing patent specifications for filing in South Africa as well as filing and prosecuting corresponding foreign applications. Llewellyn also negotiated contracts for the exploitation of intellectual property between inventors and start-up companies and vice versa, and licence agreements between intellectual property rights holders (not always patents) and users, particularly in the biotechnological field where there are unique circumstances. Llewellyn was also active in intellectual property litigation, again not limited to patents, but including copyright, unlawful competition and contract, particularly restraint of trade provisions. Sadly, he was involved in a tragic accident earlier in the year and passed away in June 2011.
