Professor Dr. iur Dr. med. Alexander P. F. Ehlers,
After his studies of medicine at the universities of Düsseldorf, Heidelberg and Munich, Prof. Dr. iur. Dr. med. Alexander P. F. Ehlers wrote a doctoral thesis on the history of medicine in Central America. While gaining practical experience as a doctor in different positions, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers started studying Law at the Munich University Law School in 1980. In 1983, he started to work on his second thesis on medical law which he finished in summer 1986.
In 1983, he opened his own doctor’s office in Munich as a general practitioner. First, he was only caring private patients, in October 1983 he became a paneldoctor.
From 1984 to 1987, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers was a civil servant employed by the state government of Bavaria. He worked in several positions with the administrative and judiciary branches of the Bavarian state government. At the same time, while still running his doctor’s office, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers gathered experience as an attorney while working for a major Munich law firm specialised in medical malpractice law.
Besides this, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers became assistant professor at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Munich in 1984. In 1986, he started with his habilitation in the field of medical law. In the winter term 1987/1988 he received his first invitation to lecture on forensic psychiatry. Since the winter term 1988/1989 until the summer term 2006 he has been lecturing regularly on medical law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich. In the year 2003 he has been appointed honorary professor for medical law and health care systems at the GMT Gesundheitsakademie GmbH in Oestrich-Winkel. In 2007 he became Director of the Department Health Care Management Institute (HCMI) of the European Business School, Oestrich-Winkel.
Because of his studies and experience in medical and pharmaceutical law, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers also acts regularly as counsel for the pharmaceutical industry.
From 1991 – 1999 he was a member of the congress of representatives of the Bavarien association of paneldoctors.
From the very beginning, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers has been a member of the first German society for medical law and was this organisations general secretary from 1992 – 1994. Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers has also published books and articles in periodicals on medical law. He is a co-author of a loose-leaf treatise on medical law which has been published since June 1988. Since two years he is member of Rotary Club.
Since 1992 he is also lecturing with the medical department of the University of Dresden and since 2001 with the University of Lüneburg focusing on medical law and integrated care.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers is a founding member of the German Society for Law and Politics in the health care sector. He served as the deputy chief executive office of the Federal Association Managed Care and became honorary member of this association in 2004.
Furthermore, since 1997 he is the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Association of Cardiologists in the out-patient sector.
Since Oct 5th 2005 Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers is a specialist solicitor in medical law according to the provision of the chamber of lawyers in Munich.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers whose mother tongue is German is fluent in English and knows some Spanish.
