An Vijverman has graduated in law from the Facultés Universitaires de Namur (FUNDP) and from the K.U.Leuven (1997, cum laude). She also studied at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. She was called to the Brussels Bar in 1997 initially with Loeff Claeys Verbeke (currently Allen & Overy), where she finished her pupillage, later with Lontings & partners (currently Lydian). She left the latter office as senior associate, to become partner with Dewallens & partners in 2004

An’s niche within medical law is data protection, pharmaceuticals and life sciences. It is in this context that she obtained the prestigious title ‘Life Sciences Law Firm of the year 2011/CorporateINTL Global Awards’ for Dewallens & partners. At the core of her practice is the assistance of pharmaceutical companies and companies active in biotech, medical devices, healthcare ICT and processing of medical data. An’s reputation with respect to data protection/privacy issues in the healthcare sector, crosses boundaries. Herbert Smith, for instance, of London’s Magic Circle of law firms, selected Dewallens & partners in 2004 as a partner in privacy law for Belgium.

Outside her niche, An masters a wide array of healthcare law. This includes medical law, the regulation of healthcare professionals and procedures with respect to health insurance and hospitals.

An has authored a wide variety of publications on various aspects of health care law. She has also co-authored “Chapters on Pharmaceutical Law”. An regularly lectures on issues of healthcare law and teaches at Ehsal Management School, Brussels. She is a member of the National Commission on the evaluation of the legislation concerning the interruption of pregnancy, of the editorial committee of the Belgian Journal of Health Law, of the Brussels Pharma Law Group and of the Ethical Committee at the Europa hospitals, Ukkel (Brussels).
