James Buchan is a partner and the current head of the Intellectual Property Group in Gowlings’ Toronto office.

James is a litigator and adviser specialising in contentious and non-contentious IP matters involving the management, protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights. James’ practice includes trademark portfolio management and prosecution, trademark opposition proceedings and litigation involving patents, copyright, trademarks and unfair competition before the Federal Court of Canada and the Superior Court in Ontario.

James is active in numerous national and international IP industry groups. He is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada’s Litigation and Trade Policy Committees, and is one of Gowlings’ co-ordinating partners for Pro Bono Law Ontario.

A leader in his field, James has been repeatedly recommended by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for his expertise in intellectual property. He is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), the American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute.
