Dr P Nikolai Ehlers is one of the founding partners of Ehlers, Ehlers & Partner. He is qualified as a lawyer both in Germany and in New York. His practice focuses on aviation and international business matters.

Mr Ehlers has extensive experience in handling aviation claims and subrogation claims for airlines, manufacturers, airports and their insurers and conducting complex litigation. He has been retained by international defendants in all four major aviation crash cases affecting Germany in the past two decades: Lockerbie, Birgenair, Concorde and the Lake Constance mid-air collision.

He regularly advises on air carrier regulatory (licensing, traffic rights, certification, construction of airports) and finance matters (German and cross-border leases, sale and purchase of aircraft, registration of title and security interests, repossession), as well as corporate transactions, competition issues, insolvency proceedings, tour operator liability regulation and other aviation-related issues.

Mr Ehlers graduated from Munich University in 1982 and received post-graduate degrees from the Institute of Air and Space Law of McGill University (Montreal) and the Institute of Air and Space Law of Cologne University.

Among others, he is an officer of the European Air Law Association (EALA) and serves on its Committee of Management, the advisory boards of the Journal of Air Law and Commerce (SMU-Dallas) and of the journal Air & Space Law (Kluwer) and on the Board of the McGill Institute of Air and Space Law Association. He is one of the founding members of the German aviation law roundtable “Luftrechtsforum”.

Mr Ehlers has written and co-written several books and numerous articles. He has spoken on air law topics in Europe, the US, the Middle East, Asia and Australia and has also organized and chaired conferences himself.

He is listed as a leading aviation lawyer in many international professional directories
