Claire Tucker is a director at Bowman Gilfillan and the head of the Energy and Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change practice areas.
She obtained a BA LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MSc in Law and Development from the London School of Economics. While overseas she worked for two years in London at Leigh Day and Co.
She is currently advising the National Treasury and the Department of Energy on the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers procurement process, including advice on land use planning, environmental, spatial development and licensing issues related to the construction of renewable power plants.
Claire has advised the International Finance Corporation on carbon trading in South Africa and assisted companies in negotiating a Carbon Emission Reduction Purchase Agreements. She acted for the sponsors on all aspects of the PetroSA biogas project in Mossel Bay, which was the first approved carbon emissions reduction project to be operational in South Africa and has been involved in numerous other emission reduction projects.
She also has extensive experience in CDMs and liaising with the DNA, and has relationships with the carbon trading units of overseas based law firms, which have undertaken numerous carbon trading transactions within the established European carbon trading mechanism.
Claire has advised on various energy projects including petroleum, municipal gas, nuclear (including the Pebble Bed Nuclear Power Station project), coal, and hydro-electric projects.
